Leader of the Opposition in parliament and Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Dr Shafiqur Rahman has urged law enforcers to be people-oriented and proactive for the welfare of citizens and the progress of the country.
He made the comments as the chief guest while speaking at a views-exchange meeting between Jamaat's MPs --Barrister Mir Ahmad Bin Qasem of Dhaka-14 and Abdul Baten of Dhaka-16 --and the police personnel deployed in the two constituencies on Thursday.
He said the role of law enforcing agency is crucial for ensuring safety and security of the people and for building a society based on equality.
"Members of law enforcement agencies should play a more pro-people and effective role in earning the trust of the public," he said.
He called upon all political parties and social organisations to work jointly for the sake of peace, discipline and development of the country.
The MPs of Dhaka -14 and Dhaka-16 stressed the need for taking combined efforts to tackle law and order alongside development activities of their respective areas.
The police personnel at the meeting assured the local people that they would maintain law and order and requested public cooperation.
Meanwhile, Jamaat-e-Islami has expressed deep concern over the brutal killing of Shahriar Sharmin Binti, an eighth grade student of a school in the capital's Rayerbazar area.
In a statement issued on Thursday, Assistant Secretary General and also head of media cell of BJI Advocate Ahsanul Mahboob Zubair condemned the brutal murder, saying the incident reflects the deteriorating law and order and growing social insecurity in the country.
Earlier, around 10:00 pm on Wednesday, Shahriar Sharmin Binti was brutally murdered by miscreants in front of her residence at Rayerbazar in the capital.
