Shafiul killing: Another 7-day remand sought for 11 suspects

Saturday, 22 November 2014

Police have sought another 7 days to question 11 suspects detained over killing of Prof AKM Shafiul Islam of Rajshahi University (RU). The Rajshahi Metropolitan Magistrate’s court on Friday sent the detainees to jail and fixed Sunday for the remand hearing. They were questioned once over two days in connection with the murder. ‘We want to question them more since we’ve become pretty sure about militants’ involvement in the murder,’ Motihar police station’s OC Alamgir Hossain, investigating the case, said on Friday afternoon. RU Registrar Entajul Haq filed a murder case without naming anyone last Sunday (Nov 16), a day after the Sociology department teacher was stabbed dead near the university campus by unknown assailants. Following the murder, police held a total of 37 people during raids in Rajshahi and sought remand for 11 people, all of them Jamaat-e-Islami supporters. OC Hossain said they had got information on a possible militant-link with the killing. He said the absconding armed cadres of the Jamaat and its student front might be involved with the killing. ‘We’ve become certain after questioning the detainees that absconding Jamaat-Shibir cadres are involved in clandestine activities,’ he added, according to a news agency.
