Shahbagh erupts with joy

The Ganajagaran Mancha has reacted with joy to the capital punishment awarded to Jamaat-e-Islami leader Mir Quasem Ali for wartime offences. Bangladesh’s second International Crimes Tribunal gave the order on Sunday, nearly six months after the Jamaat executive council member’s war crimes case was wrapped up. Imran H Sarkar, spokesperson for Ganajagaran Mancha, a platform that came into being on February 5 in 2013 demanding the maximum penalty for war criminals, said people wanted death for them. ‘We’ve got the verdict we hoped for. We’re also telling the government and all concerned to prevent the Jamaat and (Islami Chhatra) Shibir from indulging in violence during their strike.’ Sarkar then headed a rally out of Shahbagh to celebrate the verdict, according to a news agency.
