The Appellate Division granted the Anti-corruption Commission (ACC) to appeal against the High Court (HC) judgment that had scrapped the trial court order sentencing former State Minister for Law Barrister Shahjahan Omar to 13 years' imprisonment with fine in a graft case, reports UNB.
After hearing the ACC leave petition, a four-member Appellate Bench of the Supreme Court, headed by Chief Justice M Muzammel Hossain, passed the order.
On September 27, 2007, the ACC filed the case against the BNP leader accusing him of amassing wealth worth Tk 2,06,15,803 beyond his known source of income and concealing information about his wealth worth Tk 46,18,502.
On May 14, 2008, a special court sentenced Shahjahan Omar to 13 years' imprisonment as it found him guilty of accumulating wealth illegally and hiding information about it to the ACC. The court also fined him Tk 1.0 million.
Later, convict Shahjahan filed a petition with the HC seeking to have the special court orders against him in the graft case quashed and got judgment in his favour.
