Shahjahan Siraj's son jailed for 32 years

Thursday, 6 September 2007

Already convicted along with his parents, Rajib Siraj Apu, son of former minister and BNP leader Shahjahan Siraj, was again jailed for 32 years Wednesday in four income-tax-dodging cases, reports UNB.
A special court set up at the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban for trying high-profile corruption suspects delivered the judgment without the convict in the dock.
Rajib was tried in absentia, as were his parents, as the entire family has gone into hiding to dodge the ongoing anti-corruption drives.
"He will have to serve only eight years in jail," says the court order, making the jail sentences concurrent.
The court also fined him Tk 2.4 million. In default, he has to suffer four years more in prison.
Earlier on August 24, a special court sentenced Rajib and his parents to eight years imprisonment each, with fines, for individually evading income-tax.
All the convicts are on the run, as they have been fugitive since the interim caretaker government launched the anti-corruption.
