Friday, 5 February 2010

It was the bravery of the highest honour to keep one's own grief aside and walk in to serve the nation, it was none other than Shakhawat Hossain Sohel, who along with Zamal Hossain Mollah, Dulal Hossain and Mohammad Zakruzzaman won the gold of the team event of golf at the Kurmitola Golf Club in the city Thursday, reports BSS.
The whole golf course was touched and amazed at Shakhawat's feat who just before the start of the match heard that his father had passed away but the brave golfer was ready to serve his country and turned his own sorrow into strength to capture the coveted gold in the golf team event along with his teammates.
Kazi Mohiuddin Khokon, father of Sohel, died at his Mirpur residence here at the age of 55.
Bangladesh team comprising Zamal Hossain Mollah, Dulal Hossain, Shakhawat Hossain Sohel and Mohammad Zakruzzaman collected 422 points after the completion of 36 holes with 10 under par to bag the gold.
Shakhawat, just 15 minutes before the tee-off at 8:30 am, suffered a jolt when the shocking news came that his beloved father passed away. He was stunned and Bangladesh camp was also in grief. He sat down for few minutes and took time to compose himself and declare himself ready to serve the nation.
Sohel scored 144, the third lowest among the Bangladeshi golfers, while Zamal piled up 137, the lowest. Zakruzzaman accumulated 145 and Dulal Hossain totalled 141 to present the country the fifth gold medal of the seven team event.
Apart from the Maldives, all the other seven South Asian nations participated in the event.
The Indian team comprising Ashbeer Singh Saini, Chikkarangappa Senapaa, Mohammad Rashid Khan and Rahul Bajaj totalled 435 to bag the silver while Nithun Perera, Prabagaran Kandasmy, Chandradasha and Vijita Bandara Ranarthana, who formed the Sri Lankan team, grabbed the bronze with 447 points.
Sohel was shattered and after the match he spoke to journalists. "I lost my father who would have been delighted to see the gold medal hanging around my neck. He was my inspiration, but it is really unfortunate that he is no more to see my success.
"I decided to continue only in his memory and for the sake of the country I have to carry on. I don't know how to express the feelings, I dedicate this success to the people of the country and my beloved father," said Sohel.
Zamal hoped the success puts golf in the limelight. "Golf can produce continuous success story for the country. We look forward to continuing the trend with the support of the government and the other concerned quarters," added Zamal.
The individual event of golf got underway and the event will be decided on Saturday afternoon.
