Shakib emerges highest paid cricketer in BPL
Friday, 21 December 2012
Shakib Al Hasan, the second best all-rounder in Test cricket, became the highest paid cricketer when Dhaka Gladiators bought him for US$365,000 in the player's auction held Thursday for the second edition of the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL), reports UNB.
The franchises bid hard to have Shakib in their tents when his worth shot past the maximum $70,000 set for the local golden-category cricketers. Particularly, Shakib's last year's franchise-Khulna Royal Bengals-had climbed uphill in a desperate bid to keep the former national captain on their side.
The auction held at the Radisson Blu Water Garden Hotel's Utshab Banquet Hall in Dhaka saw Shakib overtake the highest paid foreign golden-category cricketer, Imran Nazir of Pakistan.
Nazir topped the Golden category for foreign players as he was purchased for $280,000 by the Chittagong Kings who also kept their previous edition's stalwart West Indian all-rounder Dwayne Bravo for $175,000.
Shahid Afridi of Pakistan became the third highest paid player when Dhaka Gladiators bought him for $ 275,000 while former Pakistani all-rounder Azhar Mahmood became the fourth highest paid with $260,000 bid by Barisal Burners.
Sylhet Royals claimed Bangladesh's incumbent captain Mushfiqur Rahim for $205,000, while Duronto Rajshahi paid $165,000 for Tamim Iqbal and $115,000 for the World T20 final's hero Marlon Samuels who also played for Rajshahi in the 1st edition of BPL.
Bangladesh Vice Captain Mahmududllah Riad fetched $125,000 from the Chittagong Kings.
Deadly spinners Saeed Ajmal of Pakistan and Sunil Narine of West Indies were sold for $115,000 and $75,000 respectively to Barisal Burners.
Shoaib Malik was given an $85,000 contract from the Khulna Royal Bengals while Rangpur Riders, the new franchise this year, won the bid for West Indian pacer Fidel Edwards at $75,000.
Earlier, nine foreign cricketers, including West Indies' Kieron Pollard, withdrew from the BPL players' auction held on Thursday in Dhaka. Pollard played for Dhaka Gladiators, last season's champions, and this year he was in the Golden category.
The BPL governing council, however, added two overseas players to the auction for the 2nd edition-batsman Marlon Samuels of West Indies and opener Tillakaratne Dilshan of Sri Lanka.
England batsman Michael Lumb, who was in category A, also pulled out. The other players to withdraw were Craig Ervine (Zimbabwe), Cameron Merchant (New Zealand), James Taylor and Ed Young (England), Michael Smith (South Africa), Fawad Alam (Pakistan), and Chesney Hughes (West Indies).
Pakistan seamer Yasir Arafat, Netherlands all-rounder Ryan Ten Doeschate and England all-rounder Peter Trego were included in category A. Category B included Aaron O'Brian (Australia), Ahmed Shehzad (Pakistan), and New Zealanders Jacob Oram and Nathan McCullum.
Adnan Raza (Pakistan), Carlton Baugh (West Indies), Chris Schofield (England), Sean Ervine (Zimbabwe), Kaushal Lokuarachchi (Sri Lanka) and Taijul Islam (Bangladesh) were in category C for the auction.
The BPL Governing Council has fixed an expenditure limit of $1.5 million for the franchises this year. No franchise can have more than 10 foreign players while only five of them will be eligible to play in a particular match.
The second edition of BPL with seven franchises will start on January 17, 2013.
