Thursday, 6 June 2024

Bangladesh's Shakib al Hasan has wrestled back the top spot in the T20 all-rounder rankings from Sri Lanka's Wanindu Hasaranga, report agencies.
Interestingly, Hasaranga's score of zero against South Africa dropped him a place in the rankings. The ICC released the weekly update of the men's player rankings on Wednesday, based on the performances in the first seven matches of the World Cup.
In the match against South Africa, which Sri Lanka lost by 6 wickets, Hasaranga failed to score any runs. Sri Lanka were bowled out for 77, setting an embarrassing record for their lowest total in T20Is. Later, with the ball, Hasaranga took 2 wickets for 22 runs.
Due to the loss in rating points, the Sri Lankan captain has dropped to second place among all-rounders, with a rating of 222 points. Shakib, who regained the top spot, now has 223 rating points.
In the match where Sri Lanka lost, Anrich Nortje achieved his career-best bowling figures, taking 4 wickets for just 7 runs.
This performance set the record for the best bowling figures for South Africa in T20Is. He stormed into the top ten in the ICC T20I bowlers rankings after his match-winning spell.
Nortje dismissed Kamindu Mendis (11 off 15), Kusal Mendis (19 off 30), Charith Asalanka (6 off 9) and Angelo Mathews (16 off 16) to bundle out Sri Lanka for just 77 and set up an easy six-wicket win for his side. His figures are now the best ever registered by a Proteas bowler in T20 World Cup surpassing his previous best of 4/10 against Bangladesh in the 2022 edition. Following his sensational performance, Nortje has climbed nine places in the T20I bowling rankings and has burst into the top ten occupying the eighth spot. The South African is only the second seamer in the top ten after Australia's Josh Hazlewood who sits on the fifth spot.
Besides Nortje, Afghanistan's star Fazalhaq Farooqi too walked into top 10 of the bowlers rankings in T20Is. Farooqi's back-breaking spell of 5/9 against Uganda which helped Afghanistan win the match by 125 runs, helped him secure 10th place in the standings after rising three places up.
England wrist-spinner Adil Rashid continues to be at the top while the Indian spin duo of Ravi Bishnoi and Axar Patel are on the third and fourth spots respectively. Meanwhile, Bangladesh all-rounder Shakib al Hasan has once again reclaimed the top spot in the all-rounder rankings replacing Sri Lanka's Wanindu Hasaranga. The 26-year-old scored a duck with the bat in the opening fixture against SA which resulted in him being dropped by one spot.
