Shakib to lead the team for ICC World T20 West Indies 2010

Wednesday, 31 March 2010

Shakib Al Hasan will lead the Bangladesh team for the ICC World T20 West Indies 2010 with former captains Mohammad Ashraful and Mashrafe Bin Mortaza being included in a 15-member squad announced Tuesday by Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB), reports BSS.
BCB's chairman of the selector Rafiqul Alam and member former national player Zahed Razzaq Masum announced the team in a press conference held today at Sher-e-Bangla National Auditorioum.
There were few surprises as top-order batsman Jahirul Islam, who made his Test debut earlier this month against England and all-rounder Mohammad Sohrawordi who also played his first international for Bangladesh in the ODI Series against England were drafted.
Fast bowler Masrafe Bin Mortaza, who played the opening one-dayer against England returns to the side while another experienced campaigner Mohammad Ashraful, who was not part of the Test and ODI squads that featured against England has been recalled in the squad for ICC World Cup Twenty20.
But the surprised inclusion of Jahirul Islam ahead of Zunaed Siddiqui raised few eyebrows. However chief selector Rafiqul Alam gave his view of the inclusion of uncapped Jahirul, the top run getter in this season's domestic first class competition said. " Jahirul, the right-hander has forced his way into the team with his runs in domestic circle. he topped batting with three centuries in National Cricket league and is capable of playing the big shots. His sheer abilities and a consistent performance over the years at first class, academy and club level has caught our eyes to earn his spot. He can also be our back-up wicketkeeper, opener and his fielding is also good."
BCB selectors also felt that Bangladesh are placed in a very strong group along with Pakistan and West Indies. But you cannot write off anyone in cricket and Bangladesh are no longer a pushovers, Tigers have enough potentials to challenge any team on their day. So we are keeping our fingers crossed and hoping that we qualify for the second round, said the BCB selectors.
Bangladesh will play their first match of Group A on May 1 against defending champions Pakistan at Beausejour Stadium, Gros Islet, St. Lucia.
Tigers will finish their Group A engagements on May 5 when they meet favourites Australia at Kensington Oval, Bridgetown, Barbados
