Shahidul Islam, father-in-law of slain Narayanganj City panel mayor Nazrul Islam, claimed Tuesday that local MP Shamim Osman had no hand in the sensational Narayanganj seven murders, reports UNB. "I don't think Shamim Osman had any link with the killings. A quarter is trying to play a foul politics centring him (Shamim), he said.
In the wake of media reports that Samiam Osman may be involved in the murder, Shahidul made the claim at a press conference at Dhaka Reporters' Unity (DRU).
Reading out a written statement, he said those who leaked the telephone conversations between the prime accused of the murder case, Narayanganj ward-4 Councillor Nur Hossain, and Shamim Osman were behind the murders. "Why didn't they arrest Nur Hossain after knowing his whereabouts on that time?" he questioned pointing at the law enforcers.
Referring to the leaked telephone talks between Nur Hossain's bodyguard Hasan and Narayanganj city Mayor Selina Hayat Ivy's close aide Abu Sufian, Shahidul said why is this not getting importance?"
He wondered why Sufian has not been interrogated yet. "Whether were they the masterminds and financers of the killings? Is any quarter is trying to protect them?"
Shahidul further claimed that the telephone conversations between Nur Hossain and Shamaim did not prove the MP abetted the councillor fleeing abroad. "Those who disclosed the conversation had helped him escape."
Shahidul said he believed that the killers will be arrested and punished as the son-in-law of Disaster Management and Relief Minister Mofazzal Hossain Chowdhury Maya has been arrested.
He said he has confidence in Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's assertion that the killers must be arrested and tried, no matter how much influential they are. He, however, declined to reply to any question from journalists and hurriedly left the scene amid police protection.
Meanwhile another report from Narayanganj adds, police recovered firearms and bullets during a raid on a bus owned by city councillor Nur Hossain, the prime accused in the seven-murder case, at Shimrail in Siddhirganj here early Tuesday.
Tipped off, a police team conducted the drive at Tekpara, Shimrail early in the morning.
During the half-an-hour drive, the law enforcers recovered three pistols, one revolver, seven bullets and five machetes from the bus of 'ABS Paribahan' parked at Tekpara.
However, there was no arrest.
