Shamsul Islam freed on bail
Friday, 1 August 2008
Former minister and BNP standing committee member M Shamsul Islam was released on bail from the Dhaka Central Jail Thursday, a day after his party colleague and co-accused in the GATCO graft case Mr Mannan Bhuiyan came out, reports UNB.
Witnesses said the BNP leader walked to freedom at about 12:22pm from the jail following a High Court order.
Mr Islam, who was sent to jail after his surrender to the Dhaka CMM Court on May 18, the same day when Mr Mannan Bhuiyan also surrendered, was granted ad-interim bail by the High Court in the case on July 28.
Some BNP leaders and lawyers received him at the jail gate and later he went to his residence.
Detained immediate-past Prime Minister and BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia is the principal accused in the case, which was filed amid a crackdown on the ruling politicians of yesteryear in the interim period.
Earlier, two other senior ministers of Khaleda Zia's past government were also set free on High Court bail in this case. They are former industries minister and Jamaat-e-Islami chief Matiur Rahman Nizami and former minister and BNP leader MK Anwar.
Khaleda's younger son Arafat Rahman Koko, also an accused in the Gatco case, was set free on parole for overseas treatment.
