Shariatpur dist admn comes forward in aid of tortured housewife

Local administration of Shariatpur district following instruction by Prime Minister's Office (PMO) came forward Tuesday in aid of Taslima alias Fulmala (30), who was brutally beaten up allegedly by her husband.
The PMO came to know about the victim through a FE (Financial Express) photo published on the third page (Metro/News) of the January 27  issue of the paper and directed the administrations of Shariatpur and Gazipur districts to immediately take care of the ill-fated woman.
Following the order, magistrate Abdul Haque on behalf of Shariatpur administration visited Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) where Fulmala has been lying on a bed for the last several days and handed over Tk 10,000 in cash to the victim's brother Mohammad Ripon.
Talking to the FE, Mr. Haque said they will provide both financial and legal support to her for establishing law of the land.
"It's very pathetic and the inhumanity cannot be accepted at all," he said after giving full credits to the FE for publishing her photo.
Mohammad Ripon, the victim's brother, said his brother-in-law Abdul Alim, who used to live at Gazipur Chowrasta along with his family, took his sister to Beltoli village under Sreepur upazila in Gazipur on January 17 with the intention of killing her.
"He beat her up mercilessly there and left the spot thinking she was dead," he said adding that local people with the help of local police rushed her to a local hospital from where she was shifted to the DMCH as her condition deteriorated.
He said Fulamala's husband informed them after three days of the incident that she went for shopping and did not return.
"Then we started searching her. On January 23 a man came to our home and informed us of her whereabout. We do not know why the attempt of murder was made," Ripon said and started crying.
A DMCH doctor said the condition of the victim is still in danger as the attackers uprooted some teeth of the victim and she lost hearing power of her right ear.
"They (the attackers) also hit her head. It's really inhuman," he said.
Earlier on Monday last, local administration of Gazipur district visited her at DMCH and provided Tk 10,000 to the victim's family.
