Sharp rise in commodity prices in Bihar

PATNA (India), June 22 (PTI): Retail prices of most of the essential commodities have shot up sharply here, some even by over 60 per cent, in the last four years, according to the government data.
Prices of potato and onion, two sensitive commodities, have, however, shown some resilience during the period.
The data, maintained by the Centre's Consumer Affairs Ministry, reveals that between May 24, 2004 and June 12, 2008 rice prices have gone up by 50 per cent from Rs 8 a kg to Rs 12 while those of wheat shot up by a whopping 70 per cent to Rs 11 from Rs 6.50 a kg.
Similarly, wheat flour (atta) prices have inched up by 47 per cent to Rs 12.50 a kg from Rs 8.50 levels. Gram (chana) has become dearer by 29 per cent to Rs 27 from Rs 21 a kg. Tur prices have also spiralled by 23 per cent to Rs 37 from Rs 30.
Continuing with the rising curve, mustard oil prices have increased by 33 per cent to Rs 73 a litre from Rs 55, while those of vanaspati dearer by 23 per cent. Prices of vanaspati, used mainly by restaurants and dhabas, rose to Rs 64 a kg from Rs 52 per kg during last four years.
Tea prices too have gained some upward movement with a 30 per cent rise to Rs 130 level from Rs 100 a kg. Milk prices have moved up by 64 per cent to Rs 18 from Rs 11 a litre, salt to Rs 8 from Rs 6 a kg.
However, potato prices have dipped by 30 per cent to Rs 5 a kg, while those of onion have fallen to Rs 5 from Rs 6 a kg.
