The house of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's paternal cousins, Sheikh Helal Uddin, MP, and Sheikh Soheil, came under attack in Khulna on Wednesday. Sheikh Helal and Sheikh Soheil’s Khulna home were attacked on the eve of the 1st phase of nationwide 72-hour hartal (general strike) called in protest against death sentence awarded to Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Matiur Rahman Nizami by a war crimes tribunal. The International Crimes Tribunal (ICT)-1 awarded capital punishment to the Jamaat leader on Wednesday for his crimes against humanity during Bangladesh’s independence struggles in 1971. Police said attackers on two motorcycles shot several rounds at the house in Khulna city’s Sher-e-Bangla Road around 11:00pm on Wednesday. Sheikh Soheil, a director of the Bangladesh Cricket Board, was not at home. Four bullet marks were seen on the front gate and a wall. Sonadanga Model Police OC Maruf Ahammed said 4 policemen in charge of the building’s security have been suspended. The shooters fired five rounds from an alley opposite to the house, he said, according to bdnews24.com.
