A late strike by substitute Sabuj takes Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club to the final of the GrameenPhone Federation Cup football beating Muktijoddha Sangsad KC 1-0 in the 2nd semifinal at the Bir Shreshtha Shaheed Sepoy Mohammad Mostafa Kamal Stadium at citys Kamalapur Tuesday, reports UNB.
The new soccer powerhouse, Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club, which came into limelight recruiting 17 national players this season, will play the final against Abahani Limited on Saturday (Oct 30) at 5 pm.
In the day's match, Touhidul Alam Sabuj scored the all-important goal for the winners in the dying moment of the match.
Earlier, Muktijoddha Sangsad KC came close to scoring in the 6th minute of the match when Maruf's powerful shot from 25 yards was saved by experienced Sheikh Jamal custodian Aminul for a corner.
Muktijoddha Sangsad was again deprived of another goal in the 25th minute as Nigerian striker Bukola's shot from inside the danger zone off Moga header harmlessly sailed over the crossbar.
After the breather, the rejuvenated freedom fighters team got two real scoring chances within a span of two minutes, but they failed to capitalize on both occasions.
Sheikh Jamal custodian Aminul, who showed superb skill under the bar, foiled a Muktijoddha attack in the 55th minute. Maruf took a lob from near midfield, but Aminul superbly fisted the ball from goal line keeping his team out of danger.
Two minutes later, Sudanese striker Moga took a shot from the danger zone before an open net but Sheikh Jamal narrowly escaped the scare as their defender Rezaul Karim Liton brilliantly cleared the ball from the goal line much to the frustration of the Muktijoddha fans in the big bowl.
Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club launched their first attack in the 11th minute. Mohammad Zahid took a powerful free kick from 30 yards, but Muktojoddha custodian Biplob foiled the attempt brilliantly.
But it was Sabuj who finally scored the all-important goal for Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club in the 85th minute. Taking a close pass from Enamul, he gently pushed the ball home from the goal-mouth melee giving no chance to opponent custodian Biplob.
