Sunday, 20 November 2011

Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club of Bangladesh had every reason to celebrate as they lifted the coveted Safal Pokhara Cup Football Tournament title beating Nepal Army by a solitary goal in an exciting final at Pokhara Stadium Saturday, reports BSS. Sheikh Jamal's Nigerian signing Yoko scored the cherished winning goal for Dhanmondi in the injury time of first half of the extra time (107 minutes). Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club, earlier known as Dhanmondi Club, won the first Buddha Subba Gold Cup 11 years back in Dharan. They have again created history by winning the trophy of first ever Safal Pokhara Cup. Dhanmondi banking on their six foreign players became richer with Nepalese Rupees 2,50,000 as the prize money while runners-up Nepal Army received half of that amount. Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi started the game in a blistered pace keeping Nepal Army men under pressure in the first half. None could break the stalemate at the lemon break (0-0). The match moved to extra time as both the sides also failed to break the deadlock in the regulation time. When the clock ticked 105th minute, fourth official showed two minutes of injury time which proved lucky for Dhanmondi as the Bangladeshi League Champions' hard work paid off when Yoko scored utilising a pass from Sabuz. Dhanmondi held their nerves to maintain the 1-0 lead despite some real dangerous late rally. The champions hang on their solitary goal lead to clinch the first ever Safal Pokhara Cup.
