Sunday, 11 March 2012
Bangabandhu's daughter Sheikh Rehana Saturday officially returned her Dhanmondi house to the government which she received in 2001, reports BSS.
Sheikh Rehana, in presence of her eldest sister and Prime Minister (PM) Sheikh Hasina signed the registration document at a function at the PM's official Gonobhaban residence in the evening.
Finance Minister Abul Maal Abdul Muhith, State Minister for Housing and Public Works Abdul Mannan Khan and senior officials of the land ministry and registration department were present.
The Awami League (AL) government allotted the abandoned house situated on one bigha land on Road No 6 at Dhanmondi at a nominal price of Tk 101 to Sheikh Rehana on July 11, 2001.
The government allotted the house in the name of Sheikh Rehana for shelter as one of the surviving siblings of the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, who was brutally killed on August 15, 1975.
Addressing the function, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said a police station has been established in that house. As police is serving the people, we are pleased to donate the house to the police as a gift.
Sheikh Rehana said she is happy to gift the house to the government. "I'm not in politics, but BNP politicised the matter when they came to power in 2001," she deplored.
"BNP even filed a case against me, she said adding such political vengeance is unexpected and I hope none in future will face such a humiliation."
