Wednesday, 18 October 2023
Sheikh Russel Day will be observed in the country today (Wednesday) in a befitting manner coinciding with the 60th birthday of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman's youngest son Shaheed Sheikh Russel, reports BSS.
Russel, also the youngest brother of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, was born on October 18 in 1964 at the historic Bangabandhu Bhaban at Dhanmondi Road Number 32 in the capital.
But he was brutally assassinated along with most of his family members, including his father Bangabandhu, on August 15, 1975 when he was a student of class four at University Laboratory School.
Bangladesh Awami League (AL) and its different associate bodies have chalked out elaborate programmes in observance of the birthday of Sheikh Russel today (Wednesday).
As part of the programmes, AL will place wreaths at the graves of Sheikh Russel and other family members of Bangabandhu who embraced martyrdom on the fateful night of August 15, 1975 at Banani graveyard at 8.30am today, said a press release.
On the occasion, AL leaders and activists will offer fateha and join milad and doa mahfil.
Party's Dhaka north and south units, associate bodies and different socio- cultural organisations have also chalked out separate programmes to observe the Sheikh Russel Day.
Awami League General Secretary and Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader, in a statement, has urged party leaders, activists and people of all walks of life across the country to join the party programmes marking the Sheikh Russel Day.
