Shibir activists put on 2-day remand

CHITTAGONG, Feb 13: A court today allowed two days' remand for 86 arrested Shibir activists and a Jamaat leader to interrogate them in connection with incidents on Friday following murder of university student Mohiuddin Masum.
Earlier, the police produced Chittagong city chief of Jamaat-e-Islami Ahsan Ullah and others in the court of Chittagong metropolitan magistrate Azizul Huq and sought seven days' remand. The police released 10 commuters rounded up yesterday.
The court also sent 23 Shibir activists detained from the Chittagong University cottages to the jail fixing the date of hearing tomorrow. They were detained under section 154 in the early hours today. The police recovered iron rods, wooden sticks and books containing objectionable elements from the CU cottages.
Meanwhile, the Chittagong University authority formed a 3-member probe committee to investigate the killing of CU student on Thursday night. The committee has been asked to submit its report to the authority within seven days. All classes and examinations have also been suspended for seven days.
