Shibir man killed, another injured by bullets

A Shibir activist has been killed and another injured by bullets in a ‘shootout’ with police in Satkania upazila in Chittagong. The dead is Jasim Uddin, son of Fazal Karim of Fazur Para village under Sodaha union in the upazila. He was an activist of the upazila unit of Islami Chhatra Shibir, the student wing of Jamaat-e-Islami. Locals said police raided a house to arrest two Shibir activists, accused in 20 cases in connection with violent demonstration staged in the upazila as part of protests against the death sentence awarded to Jamaat leader Delawar Hossain Sayedee in February last year. When police reached No 2 Bridge on Keranihat-Bandarban Road at the village, a group of people opened fire on them. Police fired gunshots in response, triggering a ‘shootout’. All but bullet-hit Jasim and Mohammad Rafuqul Islam fled the scene about 20 minutes after the gunfight. Police recovered Jasim’s body arresting bullet-hit Shibir activist Rafique, 30, son of Abu Syed of Muhuripara of the union. The law-enforcers also recovered two firearms, eight bullets and sharp weapons from the spot. The injured duo was admitted to Satkania Upazila Health Complex, according to a news agency.
