Ship breakers allege conspiracy against industry

The country's ship breakers Monday protested continuous vile propaganda and aggression on the ship breaking industry.
They alleged that some non-government organisations are creating obstacle in association with foreign conspirators to the development of local shipbuilding industry.
They said this at a press conference at the Dhaka Reporters' Unity (DRU) in the city
Bangladesh Ship Breakers' Association (BSBA) president Hefajutur Rahman, former BSBA president Zafar Alam, former vice president Kamal Uddin and technical adviser Capt Salauddin Ahmed Selu were present at the press conference.
BSBA president Hefajutur Rahman said, Bangladesh is holding the top position in the world ship breaking market. Our country can reuse 100 per cent of the ship which is not possible in other countries of the globe."
"The participation of Bangladesh in ship purchase is significant. For this reason there is an international conspiracy to destroy the ship breaking industry in Bangladesh and some local NGOs are cooperating in this regard."
He said, "These NGOs don't know the real situation but spreading propaganda on the workers' accidents and environment pollution in ship yards which are creating negative impact in the industry."
He said, "In last eight months we could not import any ships due to non-availability of environment certificate and as such activities of ship yards stopped and workers became jobless. The price of rod, plastic and iron mounding has increased."
"After a long period we got no objection certificate for 17 ships from sea transport department. In the middle of October this year 16 shipyards out of 140 have obtained permission on environmental basis."
"But when all concerned departments are working in a coordinated way to build and flourish the ship breaking industry and boost the economic growth, someone are threatening to file case and creating obstacle to destroy the industry," he added.
