Ship-breaking policy in the offing

The government is going to formulate a policy for the ship-breaking industry to bring the sector under legal framework and regulatory control, Industries Minister Dilip Barua said Saturday.
Mr Barua was speaking as chief guest at the inaugural ceremony of a two-day long workshop on "Chemical Hazards, Safety and Environment" at Dhaka University in the city.
Institute of Chemists and Chemical Technologists Bangladesh (ICCTB) and Bangladesh Chemical Society (BCS) jointly organised the workshop.
"The growing ship-breaking industry is now playing a positive role in strengthening economy," the minister said, "but the sector also has some negative impacts on environment".
The chemical waste discharged by the industry, changes the physiochemical properties of seawater along the nearby coast line, Barua said.
"Inter-tidal sediment formation is hampered and biodiversity is destroyed for the ship-breaking procedure," he said adding, "we are not against the ship-breaking industry; but it should not be at the cost of environment."
