CHITTAGONG, June 13: A ship carrying 85 containers of transhipment cargoes bound for Indian seaports left Chittagong Port on Saturday.
Another ship, MV Taung Gyi Star, arrived here from Myanmar on the day with 76 containers of cargoes to be transhipped to the Indian ports, an official of the ship's local agent said.
The MV Ocean Probe left the jetty no. 13 at the Chittagong Port at 9:05 am carrying the cargoes to be delivered to the Indian ports at Chennai and Novoshewa. The ship will unload the containers at the Colombo port in Sri Lanka and the cargoes will then be shipped by another vessel to the Indian ports.
India has been seeking transit and transhipment facilities through Chittagong and Mongla seaports for a long time to transport cargoes to its ports.
The MV Irrawaddy, a Malaysian flag vessel, was the first ship to enjoy that facility to transport cargoes from Myanmar to India through Bangladesh. Transhipment is a facility to transport one country's cargo to another using a third country's port. Director (admin) of Chittagong Port Authority said, as per rule, cargoes could be kept at the Chittagong port's yard for maximum 28 days without any charge. After that the port will charge the dues.
However, the port will get charges on loading and unloading of cargoes for transhipment.
