Shivering cold disrupts normal life in N-region

RANGPUR, Dec 20 (BSS): Normal life continued to be seriously disrupted due to shivering cold coupled with blowing chilly winds for the seventh consecutive day in the northern Bangladesh adding to the sufferings of the people.
The severity of the biting cold further increased during the past 24 hours forcing thousands to stay indoors affecting businesses and normal activities everywhere as the shivering cold continued to sweep the northern region.
The weather started worsening from last night when the winds coupled with dense fog swept over most places decreasing visibility and forcing the vehicles to ply with their headlights on.
Local Met Office sources said both the maximum and minimum temperatures marked little fall almost at all points during the last 24 hours but reduction by only 3 degrees coupled with stronger winds caused biting cold, thus deteriorating the situation.
Normal work including farm activities were badly affected and few people were found outside, while the public places, haats, bazaars, bus stands and other places wore almost deserted look adding sufferings to the common people.
Reports from the remote areas said that sufferings of the people living in the sandy char villages in Kurigram, Lalmonirhat, Gaibandha, Rangpur and Nilphamari on the river basins mounted further due to strong winds from the north and northwestern directions.
Local Met Office Saturday recorded the minimum temperature 13.7 degree Celsius this morning at Rangpur while the highest temperature remained in between 18.5 and 19.5 degrees everywhere in the sub-Himalayan region.
The sources said that the situation might deteriorate during the next few days in the region with the reduction of the temperatures further to make the spell cold wave more active in the region.
Distribution of warm clothes among the distressed people is being continued by all concerned administrations, BDR, authorities and organisations to mitigate sufferings of the affected people everywhere, officials said.
