Shoe making reduces poverty in Gopalganj

GOPALGANJ, May 19: Beshu Biswas (32), son of Noni Biswas of Chasiania Kandi under Gopalganj pourashava, is a solvent person now who had been once a jobless and frustrated young man.
He earns Tk 19,000 in a month from his shoe making factory.
He could not continue his education after class nine due to poverty. He could not find any job to earn some money for himself and his family.
In such a situation, Chanchala Sarkar, field supervisor of Community Development Committee (CDC) of Urban Partnership Poverty Reduction Project (UPPRP), Gopalganj pourashava called him and advised him to get training in shoe making from UPPRP.
He then completed six months of training course on shoe making under UPPRP.
Beshu took a job in a shoe making factory of the town in 2007 where his salary was Tk 1,500.
After one year, he planned to open a shoe factory of his own with Tk 12,000 loan from UPPRP in 2008.
Now Beshu is the owner of the factory and he earns Tk 19,000 per month. Besides four workers are working in his factory and Beshu is giving Tk 1,500 to each employee as salary.
Beshu with his two sons, wife, parents are now living happily. His elder son is studying in class two and another son in class one.
He told the FE correspondent who was visiting his factory, "Now I am in a better situation than the previous frustrated days".
UPPRP Town Manager Md Sarawer Hossain Khan said, "our main target is poverty reduction, so that the ultra poor of the municipal areas can change their life style."
