Shootout with RAB leaves an alleged criminal dead in Mirpur

Saturday, 19 September 2009

FE Report
An accomplice of the notorious Shahar Ali was killed in a gunfight between his accomplices and members of the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) at Mirpur in the city early Friday, the police said.
The fresh killing took place at a time when both the government and local and international human rights watchdogs had been arguing over incidents of extra-judicial killing.
An official of RAB-4 unit told the FE that being tipped off a team from the unit raided Mirpur Outer Stadium at about 2:30am to arrest the accomplices of the terror gang while they were assembling there with a view to committing crimes.
Sensing presence of the law enforcers, the criminals opened fire on the RAB team forcing them to retaliate resulting in a gunfight.
"Mohammad Ali, (30), a member of the gang, was caught in the gunfire and died instantly," the RAB officer said. But they failed to arrest other members of the gang as they managed to run away from the spot.
The body was taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital morgue for autopsy. One revolver, three rounds of bullet and sharp weapons were also recovered from the spot.
Ringleader of the gang, Shahar Ali, died in a shootout with the elite force on Septembers 12 in the area.
On the following day, a top RAB-4 official was injured when a gang of criminals snatched away one of their accomplices from a RAB team.
RAB sources said 577 people were killed in 472 incidents until August 31 since the elite force was introduced on March 26 in 2004.
