Shopowners demand closure of holiday markets

Monday, 1 October 2007

Shop owners of Gausia Market in the city Sunday demanded closure of the holiday markets on Elephant Road, reports UNB.
The demand came from a view exchange meeting between the shop owners and the RAB-2 unit on law and order situation held at Gausia Market at noon.
Gausia Market Owners' Association president Kamrul Hasan Babu said the government should ban holiday markets on Elephant Road even temporarily, as the hawkers might sit there permanently and run their businesses as they used to do earlier.
He said, the hawkers set up temporary shops blocking the road in front of Gausia Market Tuesday in the name of 'Holiday Market' "creating heavy traffic jam that also hampered our businesses."
Babu said, the law and order situation in the area have improved after the deployment of the elite forces. "Now we don't have to pay toll to any criminal as we had to do in the past."
RAB-2 commander DIG of Police M Akbar Ali said they arrange such view exchange meeting to know the problems the customers and the shop owners are facing. "After getting information on the problems, we plan our strategy to face those."
He requested everybody to cooperate by giving information about the criminals, as RAB declared war against crime and criminals.
He also suggested the shop owners that for their safety and security they should set up CCTVs at different points in the market, provide identity cards to the security guards and appoint women guards as most of the customers of the market are women.
