Shops being served notices for not installing ECRs

Thursday, 20 August 2009

FE Report
The National Board of Revenue (NBR) has started serving show cause notices upon the big and medium shops for non-compliance of government's order on mandatory installation of electronic cash register (ECR).
The move came after the board has found only 20 to 25 per cent businesses so far installed the device with the rest ignoring the government's order that came into effect on January 1 this year.
All Value Added tax ((VAT) offices under NBR were chasing the business houses who are yet to purchase the machine, said a senior Vat officer.
Despite having considerable turnovers, a number of big houses are still reluctant to keep recorded data of their daily transaction, he said.
The NBR is yet to take any legal action against any of those shops as the government has promised to ensure business-friendly environment, he added.
"We will gradually enforce the order without creating any panic," the official said.
The NBR has targeted gold jewelry shops on the first phase to enforce implementation of government's order, he said.
The board recently sent letters to the all gold jewelry shops in the city reminding them to install the device in their outlets, he said.
Presently, 15 per cent Vat is levied on making charge, commission, fee or profit of gold and silver jewelry.
Vat officials claimed that tax collection from gold shops is not satisfactory compared to their annual turnover.
