NILPHAMARI, Feb 11: Lack of adequate number of cold-storages is seriously hampering potato preservation in the district for long, sources said.
According to the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE), Nilphamari district alone produces nearly 0.3 million tonnes of potato every year but unfortunately the combined storage capacity of the cold-storages in the district is only 6,700 tonnes.
The cold storages in operation here had a storage capacity of between 300 and 1,800 tonnes each, sources said.
These are Mukta Cold Storage, Jaldhaka Cold Storage, Domar Cold Storage, Mubarak Cold Storage, Saidpur Cold Storage, Sajida Cold Storage and Domar Farm Cold Storage, sources added.
In the situation, local potato growers usually fail to preserve their potatoes and compel to sell the crop at a low price during the harvesting period.
