CHITTAGONG Jan 02: Due to crisis of wagon and engine, Bangladesh Railway (BR) is not able to increase transportation of goods from Chittagong port (CP) and in turn containers are being stockpiled at the port yard, sources said.
If transportation of the goods through the trains increased, businessmen would be relieved of excess expenditures on the one hand and income of BR would also be increase substantially on the other hand, concerned sources claimed.
In view of a considerable rise in container handling at CP during recent years, the CPA has been repeatedly reminding the BR authority of the necessity to transport large numbers of containers allotting rail wagons.
According to CPA sources, the CP has been repeatedly urging the BR authority to transport at least 150 TEUS of containers daily but the inability of BR to comply with the advice, due to shortage of wagons and engines, has led to stockpiling of containers at the port yard.
On an average 250 TEUS containers lie at the CP daily awaiting despatch to the Kamalapur ICD and it has become urgent to transport the containers through railway, sources added.
