Shortfall in revenue collection stands at Tk 177.51bn till Jan

The shortfall in tax-revenue collection stood at Tk 177.51 billion until January of the current fiscal year though it grew by nearly 15 per cent during this period.
According to the provisional data of the revenue board, the tax-collection scenario has improved slightly as an aggregate target for the National Board of Revenue (NBR) was cut to Tk 4.10 trillion from Tk 4.30 trillion.
The shortfall in revenue collection was Tk 232.27 billion until December (H1) of the current fiscal year.
The NBR has collected Tk 1.97 trillion in tax in the July-January period against its target for Tk 2.15 trillion, the data show.
Three wings of the board - income tax, customs and VAT - fell short of their targets despite achieving double-digit growth over the same period last fiscal year.
Last year, the NBR's revenue collection target was Tk 3.70 trillion. The target for revenue collection grew by 16.22 per cent in the current fiscal year.
The average growth of tax revenue collection in the last five years was 10.64 per cent.
