Showcase Malaysia-2008, an exclusive Malaysian trade fair begins today (Thursday) in the city aiming to strengthen the bilateral trade relations between Dhaka and Kuala Lumpur.
The three-day trade fair is being arranged by Bangladesh-Malaysia Chamber of Commerce & Industry (BMCCI) in collaboration with Malaysian High Commission in Bangladesh and Malaysia South-South Association.
Foreign Adviser Iftekhar Ahmed Chowdhury will inaugurate the programme at Dhaka Sheraton Hotel.
"The main objective of the Showcase is to provide a platform for business communities of Bangladesh and Malaysia to establish and foster business linkages and collaborations," Syed Moazzam Hossain, secretary general of BMCCI and chairman of the organising committee of the trade show told a press briefing Tuesday in the city.
About 50 Malaysian companies will showcase their products including food and beverages, palm oil, pharmaceutical products, herbal, health supplement, cosmetics, personal care products, household items, home appliances, gift and decorative items, electrical and electronic products, generators, children play ground equipments, rubber roller for printing, drinking water vending machine, automotive products, lead acid batteries, shipping services, tours and travel services and furniture.
"It is a unique opportunity for the local businessmen to interact with the Malaysian manufacturers/exporters and also to explore the business potentialities," Syed Moazzam Hossain said.
Malaysian High Commissioner in Dhaka Abdul Malek bin Abdul Aziz, BMCCI Vice President Abdus Salam and chairman of finance sub-committee of the trade show, Ashraful H Chowdhury were present, among others, on the occasion.
The Malaysian high commissioner said business delegations from his country will also visit Bangladesh during the programme to explore businesses between the two countries.
Bangladesh has a trade imbalance with Malaysia when Dhaka exported goods worth $ 16.90 million in 2006-07 fiscal year while imported goods worth $ 384.16 million from Kuala Lumpur (KL).
"We need to take steps to reduce this gap by encouraging more Bangladesh exports to Malaysia and the government can undertake a proactive trade facilitation role for market promotion by the private sectors and getting market access through trade concessions with removing non-tariff barriers," Syed Moazzam said.
He said the BMCCI is trying to arrange a Bangladesh Trade Show in Kuala Lumpur as Malaysian investors are interested to invest Bangladesh's ceramic, food, ship-building and pharmaceutical sectors.
Malaysia is also interested to develop 'halal products' in Bangladesh.
Presently, Malaysia has investments worth $ 1.337 billion in Bangladesh's telecom, power and infrastructure sectors.
Replying to a question, the Malaysian envoy said the recent unrest with Bangladeshi workers in his country has been solved to a great extent.
