Showing proper respect to martyred intellectuals

Friday, 18 December 2009

Every year, we observe the Martyred Intellectuals Day on December 14, with great dignity in remembrance of the brutal killing of the intellectuals in the last few days of the Liberation War in 1971 by the Pakistani occupation army, in collaboration with some of the native traitors. On this day, we place wreaths at the Martyred Intellectuals Graveyard at Mirpur and Intellectuals Memorial venue at Rayerbazar.
But, hardly any of us visit these places during any other time of the year. All round the year except December, these places are the safe-ground for all kinds of anti-social activities and, thus, not worth visiting.
Therefore, placing of wreaths and observing the day have become a mere ritual with us. There are only a few who pay proper dignity and tributes to those martyrs in its true sense.
The government should take stern steps to ensure safety of these places from all miscreants engaging in activities that demean the dignity and the sacrifice of the intellectuals who made the supreme sacrifice for us to enjoy the dignity of living in an independent nation.
If these places along with others related to our liberation war are made tourist spots, people will visit the same and learn the true history of Bangladesh.
The highest sacrifice of those martyred during our War of Liberation demands nothing but unadulterated love for our country. Their exemplary sacrifice should be spread all over the world. We should show proper dignity to their memory and sacrifice; otherwise, we will not be in a position to honour and value their contribution to our freedom.
