Shrimp of over 1000 enclosures washed away

BAGERHAT, Sept 18: Shrimp of over 1,000 shrimp enclosures along the coastal areas of Bagerhat district was washed away by tidal waves due to a depression in the last two days. Shrimp farmers said due to the depression, water levels rose by 3-4 feet than normal levels in many areas, washing away shrimps worth around Tk 40 million (4 crore.) District Fisheries Department official Dr Nityananda Das said they directed upzila fisheries officials concerned to determine the extent of losses caused by the tidal waves. Meanwhile, several hundred fishermen, who took shelter in coastal areas of the district at the beginning of inclement weather, went back for fishing again after the rough sea began returning to normal. — UNB
