CHITTAGONG, Sept 28 (UNB): At least 10 persons were injured, including one with bullet, in a clash between police and transport workers at Kadamtali bus stand in the city Sunday.
Police said the clash ensued at about 11.30 am when local thana police tried to remove the vehicles kept haphazardly near the bus terminal by the transport workers.
Earlier, drivers of buses ignored police instruction to take their vehicles inside the terminal from the road saying there was no room for parking additional vehicles in the terminal.
A chase and counter-chase took place when the transport workers joined the drivers.
At one stage, the workers put barricade on the road over a rumor that police detained Haji Manik, one of the leaders of Transport Owners' Association.
Workers said police lobbed four teargas shells and fired two rounds of bullet at them, leaving terminal lineman Babul wounded by bullets.
Police, however, denied the incident of firing on the workers. When asked about the injury of Babul, they said they knew nothing about it.
According to the police, five policemen, including SI Mujibur Rahman, and four workers were injured during the chase and counter chase.
Of them, five cops were admitted to Police Line Hospital while two workers were taken to Chittagong Medical College Hospital.
Later, police picked up Haji Manik from his office at Agrabad and had a meeting with the workers to settle the matter.
After a fruitful meeting, the workers started shifting their vehicles from the road at about 2:30 pm.
