Sidr-hit people of Bagerhat struggling hard to return to normal life

BAGERHAT, Dec 15 (UNB): People of all the nine upazilas of the district, who were more or less affected by the severe Cyclone 'Sidr', are now struggling hard to return to normal life.
The cyclone with a speed of 260-280 kilometres per hour at first hit the Sundarbans here at about 8:30 pm on November 15, leaving a trail of destruction in all the nine upazilas.
Official sources said some 810 people were killed, 11,428 others injured, over 1.22 crore people more or less affected, 1,67,891 houses, 1,229 kms of kutcha and pucca roads, 12,407 fish farms, 8,372 ponds and other water bodies were damaged by the storm in the district.
Sharankhola upazila was worst hit as at least 680 people were killed in the upazila.
Over 0.1 million farmers were affected, crops on 35,092 hectares, 841 educational institutions, trees on 152,800 hectare in Sundarbans and 66 kilometres cross dams were also damaged.
Official sources estimated the losses at Tk 2.30 billion in the agriculture sector, Tk 186.6 million in the educational sector and Tk 10.0 billion in the Sundarbans.
Civil and military officials, foreign leaders, political leaders, NGO representatives and others visited the district and stood by the affected people, who are now trying their best to restart lives with the financial assistance received from them.
