Siemens to help build sky-train network

Siemens Bangladesh Ltd, one of the world's biggest electrical engineering and electronics companies, wants to help Bangladesh Railway implement its modernisation plans, which include building of a sky-train network in the capital.
"We are in a position to offer any such support … we have already delivered interlocking signaling system to the Bangladesh Railway. Siemens has a global reputation in developing Mass Rapid Transportation (MRT) system," said Bernd Luetkenhoener, executive director and chief financial officer (CFO) of Siemens Bangladesh Ltd.
In an exclusive interview with the FE, he said: "We would like to engage ourselves in cooperation with Bangladeshi partners in development of power generation, transmission and distribution, automation and drives, transportation as well as healthcare in future."
Siemens, celebrating 50 years of operation in Bangladesh, has already involved itself in supply, installation and maintenance of equipment of Bangladesh Power Development Board, Power Grid Company of Bangladesh, Rural Electrification Board and Bangladesh Telegraph and Telephone Board including its mobile network and Banglalink, he said.
Luetkenhoener, who served in more than 12 countries during his 30 years long career in Siemens, said: "We have set up, in joint venture, two factories for producing telephone switching equipment and telephone cables."
Side by side offering better industrial solutions to the local entrepreneurs, he said, Siemens will focus on developing the basic infrastructure of the country, as it has got a wide experience in building seaports and airports, mining projects and water purification plants etc.
He further said Siemens also supplied medical equipments over the last years to various government hospitals and specialised private hospitals like Apollo, Ibne-Sina, Lab Aid, Square and United hospitals.
Luetkenhoener said steps are underway to multiply the capacity of the Siemens' factory in Bangladesh where medium and low voltage switchgears are produced.
Apart from this, he said, Siemens is contemplating establishing two factories in Bangladesh for manufacturing OSRAM energy saving bulbs and other industrial and electrical equipment.
Luetkenhoener said Siemens aims at transferring know-how and its state-of-the-art technology to Bangladesh.
"We believe in continued partnership," he added.
"Siemens is continuously arranging training programmes for its employees both at home as well as abroad," said Luetkenhoener.
When asked, he said as part of corporate social responsibly (CSR), Siemens is currently supporting the institutions like Islamia Eye Hospital, Underprivileged Children's Education Programme (UCEP) and Special Education for Intellectually Disabled (SEID) Trust on a long term commitment.
Apart from this, the CFO mentioned that 'the Werner von Siemens Excellence Award' will be given once a year to three best groups of university students for their outstanding contribution to innovation in electrical and electronics field.
Siemens, established 160 years ago, expanded its activities to over 190 countries and employed more than half a million people across the globe.
