Friday, 6 July 2007

Sigma Huda, wife of the detained former communications minister and Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) leader Nazmul Huda, was detained and sent to jail to stand trial for corruption after she surrendered to a special anti-graft court Thursday, report agencies.
The court also framed charges against the Huda couple for taking Tk 24 million (2.40 crore) in bribe from a construction firm.
The indictment done, their "trial on the graft charges will now begin Monday with deposition by prosecution witnesses", court sources said.
Judge AK Roy of the special makeshift court at Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban rejected the submissions made by defence counsel praying for discharging the case.
The detained ex-minister, who faces a number of criminal charges, including an arms case, was brought in a prison van and produced in the court amid tight security.
And his co-accused wife, Sigma, came in an ambulance with standby oxygen cylinder with her. "As she surrendered, she was taken into custody", said a firsthand account of the court proceedings.
Bangladesh Society for Enforcement of Human Rights (BSEHR) Secretary General Sigma Huda was later sent to jail by court orders.
