Siltation disrupts Bhola-Barisal waterway

BHOLA, Mar 07: The rivers of Tetulia, Kirtonkhola and Kala Badar are under the threat of losing navigability due to continuous siltation and grabbing of the banks by some vested quarters.
Most of the tributaries of the river Kirtonkhola and Kala Badar have turned to lakes. About 10 kilometres (km) out of 30-km long direct river route beginning from Bheduria Launch Ghat to Barisal Launch Ghat has lost its draught. Only some points of Kirtonkhola are being kept navigable by dredging the silts.
During winter and late winter seasons, launches have to move via either Chandra Mohan or Char Monai for the lack of navigability in the direct Bheduria route. Not only that launches are found standing for hours at the middle of the river for the lack of draught of water.
According to Bhola BIWTA sources, unless the siltation in removed and riverbank is saved, the route will naturally be stopped.
