Simpson, Farah shine in London

Sunday, 26 July 2009

Jemma Simpson led home a British one-two-three in the women's 800-metre at the London Grand Prix Friday in a repeat of the result at the UK Championships.
The 25-year-old kicked off the bend to lead home Jenny Meadows and Marilyn Okoro in two minutes 01.08 seconds.
"The 800m at the World Championships in Berlin is wide open and I wouldn't put it past one of us to win a medal," Simpson told BBC Sport. Mo Farah won the 5,000m but Phillips Idowu was third in the triple jump.
Idowu, who won Olympic silver, endured a mixed evening with three fouls at Crystal Palace, but he closed with a leap of 17.16m to finish behind America's Brandon Roulhac, who jumped a career-best 17.33m.
Britain's Larry Achike's produced a season's best 17.07m to boost his chances of securing a spot on the plane to Berlin.
"I just wanted to win and I'm really happy with it," said Farah. "It wasn't easy in the wind, but the crowd made a big difference, they gave me a boost coming off the final bend." – BBC
