The government is set to select a Singaporean company for supplying equipment for exploration of gas wells in Brahmanbaria and Comilla districts, officials said.
Under the move, the ministry of power, energy and mineral resources has sent a proposal to the cabinet division for approval of M/S FMC Technologies Singapore Pvt Ltd by the cabinet committee on public purchase in its meeting tomorrow (Wednesday).
The company will supply 'Well Head and X- Mass Tree' (equipment) for Kashba-1 (Rupkalpa-3) and Salda (North) -1 (Rupkalpa-1) gas exploration wells.
The equipment will cost US$ 481,682 or over Tk 38 million.
The BAPEX has set a target to dig 108 wells aiming to exploit 1,000 million cubic feet (MMCF) of natural gas for the national grid.
Of 108 wells, 53 are exploration wells while 35 are developed wells and 20 are 'work-over' wells.
It usually takes a long time to supply gas to the national grid by exploring new gas wells and their development under the existing purchase rules.
The Bangladesh Petroleum Exploration and Production Company Ltd (BAPEX) has been implementing 10 projects under the Speedy Supply of Power and Energy (Special Provision) Act-2010.
The projects for fiscal years 2016- 2017 and 2017- 2018 will be implemented through the Gas Development Fund and Energy Security Fund.
The BAPEX had earlier used equipment supplied by the Singaporean company for gas exploration in seven to eight wells.
"The technical sub-committee of the government has recommended appointment of the Singaporean company as its proposed cost is competitive with the existing international market rates," a high official of the energy division told the FE.
