SingTel says Asia mobile phone subscribers top 249m

SINGAPORE, May 13 (AFP): Singapore Telecommunications (SingTel) reported today a 35 per cent annual increase in regional mobile phone subscribers despite the global economic downturn.
Southeast Asia's biggest telecom firm said 64 million new mobile phone customers were added, raising the SingTel Group's mobile subscriber base to 249.39 million as of March 31.
On a quarterly basis, the increase was 7.3 per cent from 232.42 million as of December 31 last year.
SingTel's aggregate mobile customer base in Singapore and seven regional markets posted year-on-year growths of between 10 and 52 per cent, led by India's Bharti Telecom.
