FE REPORT | Thursday, 12 October 2023
The Sirajganj Economic Zone (EZ) has entered into a partnership deal with the Australia Bangladesh Business Forum (ABBF), heralding a new era of economic growth and opportunities to bridge the gap between international investment and local development.
A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed to this effect at Bangladesh Economic Zones Authority (BEZA) headquarters in the capital on Wednesday.
The Sirajganj EZ, sprawling across 1035.93 acres along the banks of the Jamuna River, received its licence in 2018.
As a result, trade and product transportation opportunities will expand due to connectivity with India, Nepal, and Bhutan via Burimari, Hili, and Banglabandha (Tetulia).
With well-established road, river, air, and rail networks, the zone is poised to be an ideal hub for diverse industries. The MoU encompasses a wide array of sectors, ranging from textiles, pharmaceuticals, and agro-based products to shipbuilding and IT services. Already, 18 companies have committed to setting up their operations in the zone.
This collaboration is expected to create employment opportunities for more than 500,000 people in the region, significantly boosting the local economy. Plans include establishment of crucial infrastructure such as Common Effluent Treatment Plant (CETP), dormitories, a five-star hotel, healthcare facilities, educational institutions, and a recreational centre within the zone.
Efforts are also underway to enhance trade capabilities by connecting Chattogram and Mongla sea ports.
ABBF President Abdul Khan Ratan expressed his enthusiasm for this collaboration, emphasising its potential to strengthen economic ties between Bangladesh and Australia.
Local officials and entrepreneurs from the Sarajganj EZ attended the signing ceremony, demonstrating their dedication to the region's progress.
