Sit-in protests to continue until mayoral charge given: Ishraque

Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) mayor-elect Ishraque Hossain, also a leader of Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), said on Sunday that their ongoing sit-in programme in front of the Nagar Bhaban, headquarters of the DSCC, will continue until mayoral charge is handed over to him.
He said that emergency services like issuing birth and death certificates will continue as usual but development and other activities of the corporation will remain halted.
Ishraque made the comments after his arrival at the Nagar Bhaban during a sit-in programme organised by his supporters under the banner of Amora Dhakabashi (We are the residents of Dhaka city) at around 12:00 noon.
"The locked main gate (of Nagar Bhaban) will not be unlocked as it is a symbol of our present movement. The regular daily services for the citizens will continue under our supervision," he said.
"Rendering emergency services like issuing birth and death certificates will continue. The officials engaged in overseeing other development works of the corporation couldn't attend their offices," he warned.
Ishraque called upon the interim government to settle the issue (of handing over the DSCC mayoral charge to him) without any delay. He said that their movement will continue until the issue is settled.
He, after announcing the fresh programme ( to continue the ongoing movement), sat in a meeting with officials and employees of the corporation at Sityalakkha Conference room at the Nagar Bhaban. Asked how emergency services could be given keeping the main gate of the Nagar Bhaban under lock and key, he replied, "We will disclose the mechanism soon on how it will work."
He said that rendering emergency services like issuing birth and death certificates will start soon.
Ishraque's supporters under the banner of Amora Dhakabashi have been staging demonstrations in front of the Nagar Bhaban since May 14, 2025 demanding that mayoral charge be handed over to him ( Ishraque Hossain) immediately.
