The Dhaka city is likely to get six flyovers in heavy traffic locations of Moghbazar, Malibagh, Syedabad, Jurain, Karwan Bazar and Banani level crossings.
Of the flyovers, the government plans to construct Malibagh, Syedabad, Jurain and FDC (Karwan Bazar) level crossing flyovers at an estimated cost of Tk 240 million, officials said.
Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) will bear the cost of Tk 35 million for the construction of Moghbazar flyover.
The Bangladesh Army will carry out the work of Banani flyover to be constructed over the Dhaka Cantonment area from Zia Colony in Mirpur to Banani level crossing at its own cost, the officials added.
"People have been demanding more flyovers in the city for a long time, as they are wasting long working hours and money everyday due to heavy traffic jam," said an official of the Roads and Highways Department (RHD).
Though the government funded project was taken without feasibility study, the official said it is likely to improve the city's traffic situation.
The project for the construction of four flyovers is likely to be completed by 2012.
An official of Planning Commission said although the project proposal of the communication ministry was submitted without a feasibility study, the commission is likely to approve it considering its urgency.
"Flyovers are the need of the time. We have so far found no problem with the proposal," he said preferring not to be named.
