Six of a family among 18 killed in road crashes

Eighteen people, including six members of a single family, were killed and 29 others injured in road accidents in Dhaka, Gopalganj, Chuadanga, Magura, Comilla and Munshigannj districts on Saturday.
In Gopalganj, six members of a family and another person were killed in a head-on collision between a microbus and a battery-run three-wheeler, Easy-bike, on the Gopalganj-Kotalipara road in Sadar upazila in the morning.
The deceased were identified as Khokon Sikder, 45, his wife China Begum, 40, his mother Katebunnisa, 70, his son Shakib, 28, and two daughters Eti, 7, and Aniya, 16, of Teligati village in the upazila and the easy-bike driver Delwar.
Officer-in-charge (Investigation) of Sadar Police Station Selim Reza said the accident took place around 10am at Shibpur, leaving six passengers of the three-wheeler dead on the spot and five others injured.
One of the injured died on the way to hospital.
On information, police recovered the bodies and sent those to Sadar Hospital for autopsy.
In Dhaka, five people, including two women, were killed and 25 others injured as two buses collided head-on on the Dhaka-Aricha highway in Kelia area under Dhamrai upazila in the afternoon.
Three of the deceased were identified as Abul Kalam Azad, 57, Sumaiya Khan, 17, hailing from Faridpur district, and Kotu Miah, a bus driver.
Rezaul Karim, officer in-charge of Dhamrai Police Station, said the Dhaka-bound ‘Bikash Paribahan’ bus collided with the Faridpur-bound ‘Sara Paribahan’ bus in the area around 1:30pm, leaving five passengers dead on the spot and 25 others injured.
The injured were admitted to different hospitals in Dhamrai and the capital.
A  CNG-run auto-rickshaw driver, Jamal, 25, was killed in another accident on the highway in Islampur area of the upazila.
In Chuadanga, a head-on a collision between a truck and a human hauler left two people dead on the Chuadanga-Jhenidah highway in Subdiya area of Chuadanga Sadar upazila in the morning.
The deceased were identified as Shafi Uddin and Khairul Islam.
Liakat Hossain, officer-in-charge of Chuadanga Sadar Police Station, said the accident took place in the morning when Shafiuddin died on the spot and Khairul Islam and his wife suffered injuries.
The injured were taken to Chuadanga Sadar Hospital where doctors referred Khairul to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) in the capital. He, however, died on the way to the DMCH.
In Magura, a man was crushed to death by a speeding bus in Magura bus stand area of the district town around 10am.
The deceased was identified as Ranjan Mondal, 60, a resident of Naubhanga village of Mohammadpur upazila.
Munshi Asaduzzaman, officer-in-charge of Magura Sadar Police Station, said the bus ran over Ranjan in the area while he was crossing the road, leaving him dead on the spot.
On information, police recovered the body and sent it to Magura Sadar Hospital morgue.
In Comilla, an unidentified young man was crushed to death by a bus on the Dhaka-Chittagong highway at Kotbari in Comilla  Sadar upazila in the evening.
Police said the Dhaka-bound ‘Ekushey Paribahan’ bus from Noakhli ran over the youth round 7:30pm while he was walking by the road, leaving him dead on the spot.
In Munshiganj, a passerby was crushed under the wheels of a bus at Chhanbari on the Dhaka-Mawa highway in Srinagar upazila.
The deceased was identified as Sirajul Islam, 55, a resident of Dakkhin Paiksa village in the upazila.--UNB
