CHATTOGRAM, Nov 26: Sramik Karmachari Oikya Parishad (SKOP) staged a blockade programme in the port city on Wednesday, protesting the alleged conspiracy to lease out the New Mooring Container Terminal (NCT) of the Chittagong port to a foreign company.
Hundreds of workers, activists and employees gathered in front of the Seaman's Hostel at the Toll Plaza, and Barapol, Ishaq Depot and Saltgola Crossing areas from 10am to 1.00pm to voice their opposition.
Addressing the blockade programme, SKOP leaders said, "Chittagong port is the lifeline of country's economy. NCT is a self-sufficient and profitable facility. "We will not allow the Chittagong port to be handed over to foreigners."
"SKOP will continue to resist this conspiracy, and if necessary, we will call for a strike to protect Chittagong port," said a leader.
The workers also took aim at the interim government, asserting that it has no right to enter into agreements with foreign companies regarding port facilities.
They called for the government to hold the national elections as soon as possible.
Despite the unrest, Chittagong Port Authority (CPA) Secretary Omar Faruk assured the public that port operations were functioning normally.
On November 24, a meeting between the Chittagong Port Authority and SKOP representatives was held on November 24, but it failed to resolve the ongoing labour unrest.
