Skypower Global to invest $4.3b in solar power sector

Canadian solar-energy developer Skypower Global has announced that it will invest $4.3 billion in Bangladesh’s solar power sector. Its President and CEO Kerry Adler made the announcement in a meeting with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina at Hotel Waldorf Astoria in New York on Friday. Finance Minister AMA Muhith, Prime Minister’s ICT Adviser Sajeeb Ahmed Wazed Joy and State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shahriar Alam were present at the meeting organised by the Business Council for International Understanding (BCIU). Prime Minister’s Press Secretary Ihsanul Karim told BSS that the company agreed to invest the amount to set up a 2000 megawatt solar power plant in next four years in Bangladesh. The company would set up its office at Tungipara in Gopalganj, which would create job opportunities for 42,000 people. The company would also donate Bangladesh 1.5 million home lanterns. The prime minister highlighted tremendous investment potentials of Bangladesh while inviting the conglomerates to invest in the country, it said. Heads and CEOs of 27 global firms attended the meeting, according to a news agency.
