Son of slain Rajshahi University (RU) professor AKM Shafiul Islam has told the media that being a follower of the same ideology that his father followed, he feels his life too is under threat. Soumin Shahrid Javin, a journalism student at Dhaka University, said, ‘I believe in the same ideology as my father. I am feeling insecure, gravely insecure. I appeal to the nation, please take this orphan’s words seriously.’ He was speaking on Thursday at his father’s memorial meeting conducted by RU’s sociology department. Shafiul Islam was a follower of Lalon Shah, the influential 18th century Baul poet whose songs and ideology have become synonymous with religious tolerance in the modern times. Family and colleagues say Islam’s lifestyle was deeply altered by the influence. He was hacked brutally near the RU campus on Saturday and subsequently succumbed to the injuries at Rajshahi Medical College Hospital, according to a news agency.
