Election Commissioner Mohammad Abu Hafij has said every citizen would be given smart cards to prevent counterfeit National Identification (NID) card. He announced this on Wednesday morning while releasing voters’ lists with photos at the District Commissioner’s conference room. Abu Hafij said, ‘Every citizen will be provided with a smart card to prevent faking of voter ID card. The time to replace the card will depend on the expenditure.’ He said the use of the voter ID card should not be made compulsory until everyone got them. ‘This voter ID card is being used compulsorily in many services including opening bank account, issuing passport and getting NBR services. So, counterfeiters have been increasingly been making fake cards. Smart card will be provided to prevent such fraud,’ added Hafij. In the meeting, presided over Dinajpur district commissioner Ahmed Shamim Al Raji, Senior District Election Officer Nuruzzaman Talukder, Additional District Commissioner Hamidul Haque, Additional District Commissioner (Revenue) Enamul Haque and Additional Police Super Sanjay Sarker also spoke, according to a news agency.
